I think this class has definitely calmed my nerves in regards to dealing with patients that have HIV. There was someone that i had the other day who was HIV positive, but he was also a diabetic. Because of this I had to draw blood out of him a few times a day. Its interesting to know what is in that small drop of blood, and just how it can totally change a person's life. Getting back to the men's panel, watching the guys up there and seeing just how some of them seemed to be in great health was encouraging when it comes to the medication that is available to them. I have noticed this with a few other people that I have taken care of and its great that in the past 30 years we have come a long way in terms of how live can be sustained. One thing that I really was hoping would have been different was their outlook on if HIV will ever have a "cure". We are only 30 years into this, and I think it that given enough time the world will eventually find a way to put an end to this virus.

There have been many students who, like yourself, went to the Men's Panel, and said how interesting it was. The fact they many of them seemed in good health can be one of the reasons we are not more proactive in fighting this virus. It is good for those infected, but it can give others a false sense of security. I like garlic too and never thought of it as being able to alter medication potency. Good post.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the men panel because they were so open about their lives. They helped me so much by being so honest about everything. I did not ask any questions either. But some of the classmates in there were asking really interesting questions. It has definitely changed my perspective on a lot of things about HIV. Also, thank you for the information on garlic. ReplyDeleteYou know I've been very surprised over the course of this class about the information that is out there and the different types of medications and their side effects. I was extremely taken aback by the drug interactions of some of these medications. I'm glad you've seem to overcome your fear about working so closely with HIV patients. The body in fact is the greatest mystery ever. We have engrossed ourselves in the best field in the world. If more people were able to attend panels like these, I think more than hope will be found. I wish I could have attended.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing and I had a lot to write about too! And I really feel privileged to have the opportunity to attend these panel discussions. I think that their opinions should be valued a lot more than they are; I like that they shared with us their ideas of what changes they would like to see in our schools and communities. And their stress on education is important to observe. Even though Teach and Linda P have told us again and again that education is not working; I have to strongly agree. I think that education can and would work is it was taught properly. Education should expand throughout programs in schools, the media, and the government.
ReplyDeleteI think that even though it is a downer and depressing it is understandable about the men's point of view on panel. It has been 30 years and in those 30 years we've developed a technique on how to create babies outside of a mother's womb, how to clone animals whether they be fertile or not. If we still haven't found a cure I believe that like they said we'd just find a way to contain it where it would be like the common cold.
